On the 30th of September NABC, Fenedex and SANEC are organising the Netherlands-Africa Business Meet.

The theme of the event is "Sustain your growth in Africa" and focuses this year on optimising your supply chain within Africa. This afternoon we offer you a seminar, three workshops and a networking session. All companies that are active in Africa are welcome to sign up for the Business Meet.

During the plenary session the topic of the event will be framed. Former CFO of Bavaria, Han van der Veen, will give all insights about Bavaria's new supply chain in Ethiopia. In addition Martin Dirks, employed at Helios Investment, will take the floor.

Three workshops follow the plenary session:

  • 2. Finance your supply chain. Organised by Rabobank, RVO, Chase Bank and NABC.
  • 3. Tax & Regulatory Value Chain Management. Organised by KPMG Meijburg, NOB and NABC.

The seminar of the Netherlands-Africa Business Event will start at 14.00 and end at 15.15. The seminar offers you a diverse range of speakers. Since the theme of the event is "Sustain your growth in Africa", it is equally of importance to flesh out the concept of "sustaining and optimising your supply chain". The introduction therefore will discuss the theme after which two speakers elaborate on it and will share their experiences and insights.

Workshop 1

Workshop: Supply chain strategies - Newest insights

Subject: During this practical workshop, three entrepreneurs will address issues every exporting company will encounter exploring African markets:  How to distribute your products on the new market: via importers, dealers, distributors or local agents? And how to optimise your developed supply chain? After each brief presentation, the entrepreneur will discuss all related issues with the audience. The workshop is thought-provoking for Dutch exporting companies that do not (yet) have a foot on the ground in Africa or those that are looking for ways to extend its local presence.

Workshop 2

Workshop: Finance your supply chain
Organizers: Rabobank, RVO, NABC and Chase Bank (Kenya)
Speakers: Peter Niekus (Rabobank)

Subject: This workshop offers you insights in different opportunities of funding. In particular, it focuses on the supplementary function of Dutch banks, local banks and government funding. The speakers explain the financial patterns, risks and solutions within the supply chain. A fictional case -a Dutch poultry company internationalising its business by establishing a farm in Kenya- will be presented in an interactive way. The case leaves room for discussion and demonstrates how new chains within the value chain can be funded, what the risks and corresponding solutions can be. After the workshop you are able to understand how banks and governments collaborate, which actor needs to be approached for funding of your business segment and what risks need to be mitigated.

Workshop 3

Workshop: Value Chain Management: Tax and Local Content

Speakers: Gerwin de Wilde (WLP-Law)

Subject: What do you need to take into account when you are establishing new business activities in Africa? The answer: international and  African tax and regulatory environment and local content policies. During this workshop you will learn about fiscal and regulatory considerations that can materially influence the structure of your value chain. One interesting development regards bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and cooperation agreements that Minister Ploumen has been discussing with different African countries. How does it affect your investment in general and your financial fluxes and (direct/indirect) tax obligations in particular? In addition, contemporary international standards require international businesses to reflect on their value chains in order to create sustainable transfer pricing models and policies. Two different case studies – one new entrant and one expanding business in Africa - enable you to gain further insights.

Martin Dirks:  is employed at serves at Helios. Mr. Dirks served as the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals in Lagos, a subsidiary of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Celtel International (now Bharti Airtel), where he led the highly successful turnaround of that previously loss making operation. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Maxx Management and Ukrainian Mobile Communications in the Ukraine. He served as a Senior Vice President of EMEA at Siemens Mobile Phones. Mr. Dirks served as Managing Director at Interway Holding BV. He holds 25 years of senior management experience in demanding international and multicultural environments across diverse (and highly relevant) sectors. He has been a Non Executive Director of FCMB Group Plc (formerly, First City Monument Bank Plc) since September 25, 2014.
